hi goert
assuming a little reply is better than none...
the newer autofs is 3.1.3 ( from ftp.<cc>.kernel.org ) cc== country code
when running new linux-2.2 series kernels... you must also make
sure that all your binaries are running the minimal compatible versions
or newer.... ( most distros are not patched up to minimum level )
http://www.linux-consulting.com/Linux-2.2/upgrade.pl
in order to restart autofs, you must make sure that there were no
mounted mount points at the time you took autofs down....
have fun
