Another data point.  The box I'm using for these tests is a Quad Xeon
box running in SMP :)

I have a whole bunch of processes that try to start up and change directory
into an automounted point.  If I get the RPC errors, and the automount
fails, these will now just hang there.  Once the RPC errors go away and
the network returns to normal, they are still hung.

Shutting down the automounter allows these processes to become un-hung.  Then,
by unmounting by hand (after the processes finish of course) I can restart the
automounter, and all is fine.
