Extra directories can be clumsy. For one thing I was never happy with
the /etc/rc.d level. Making /etc consists of only unrelated files
and unrelated directories will probably result in an over-structured
directory tree. So, where do you draw the line (e.g. should `ls'
fit on one 80x25 screen)?

To me a few autofs files in /etc is not a real problem. Hundreds
certainly would be.
