HJ Lu (Linux NFS maintainer) spent a lot of time troubleshooting this and found
the problem.

In my Solaris auto.home nis map I had 'timeo=300'. This had no adverse effect
when using NFSv3/TCP but caused the "can't get a request slot" error when using
NFSv3/UDP.

Thanks again HJ!
