I would suggest starting smaller. 
One could translate colons to slashes outright, 
which leaves the obvious exposure that automount can't handle 
mounted directories with colons in the path.   (Small,  but real.) 
Better would be to try the mount,  and when it fails retry with the 
translated path.   This would seem to be  "a small change" 
compared to the somewhere inconspicuous method. 
 
Just an idea.
