If you only need autofs v3 features, then the v3 debian package should
be fine; the autofs4 kernel module will simply emulate the v3 module. I
would try switching to the older kernel driver to see if you still get
hanging problems. Also, what other processes (for example, mount) are
running at the time of the hang? If the mount never completes, then
things will be blocked forever waiting for it.
