Oh, I thought that you were using the auto.net script to automount using
machine names.  What exactly are you doing, and which OS are you using?

The auto.net script is found in the tarball.  In it, you can specify whether
or not to use the symlink for the local machine.  The /net directory uses
the hostname to mount all of the directories exported from that machine.
Thus /net/machine1 will look for the exports from machine1.  If machine1 is
exporting /home, you would find the /net/machine1/home directory.  You can
do this for the local machine, and the nosymlink will mount the directories
under the /net/hostname hierarchy.
