It is included with Debian. I've been using it for quite some
time. It does have its problems - it is possible to get into
a situation where the userlevel autofs is gone, but
the /home or /net mount is still there, and you can't
get rid of it. A reboot is then required. Fortunately this
happens rarely - autofs rereads it config files on the fly
so there's not often a need to restart it, and if you do
restart it it usually works ok

You might want to take a look at the patches debian uses.
