By "domain", do you mean NIS domain or DNS domain?

When you get "no such file or directory", are the fileservers still
mounted, or have they been timed out?

When you say "after a while", do you mean that a directory which was
previously working stops working, or do you mean that some directories
just don't work?

When a directory doesn't work, are there other directories from the same
server which do work?

What kernel version are you running?
