Taking autofs out of the picture seems to make the problem go away, so
this seems to be related to that. Why, exactly, I'm not sure yet. It's
always been my understanding that autofs basically gets out of the way
once the fs is mounted, but I suppose it needs some way to check for
expiration so maybe that mechanism is causing issues.
