Please don't deprecate gz. xz decompression has terrible memory size implications. Old or cheap machines (e.g. with megabytes rather than gigabytes of DRAM) can't necessarily decompress an arbitrary xz file. Check the man page. Yes, I have several such machines around here -- including OLPCs, cellphones, and old desktop computers. I remember when EMACS stood for Eight Megs (of main memory) And (despite that huge memory) Continuously Swapping (anyway). If your source code release file can't be decompressed on an 8-megabyte machine, then don't release it that way. (I just measured gzip and it's doing fine in 2mb virtual, 508kb resident.)
