How to make dynamcally loadable modules (plug-ins) with automake?

My application should be extendable by plug ins at runtime using
dynamically loaded modules. libtool supports these, but automake appears to
only support libtool for building shared libraries (type 1 in libtools info
pages section "Dlopened modules")

How do I specify rules to create dlopened modules in automake?
