Redundant PACKAGE & VERSION set in test suite?

Is there a good reason that the following constructs occasionally appear
in 'configure.in's as created by the test suite?

    AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE(nonesuch, nonesuch)
    PACKAGE=nonesuch
    VERSION=nonesuch
