Looking at your Makefile.am, I would suggest to change it a bit and avoid SUBDIRS entirely, if you can. See https://github.com/log4cplus/log4cplus/blob/master/Makefile.am and https://github.com/log4cplus/log4cplus/blob/master/src/Makefile.am as examples of how to build libraries with sources in sub-directoris without using SUBDIRS. It improves build parallelism. -- VH
