Ok, this seems to be a specific python bug on CentOS (and possibly the corresponding RHEL6 version), as I couldn't get it to reproduce under Fedora. The workaround does not regress basic functionality (ie, even if we need SM it will be re-created in client) from what I can see, so I've commited this to next.
