Are you really sure that you are running avahi-dsicover inside a proper X11 session? i.e. is $DISPLAY initialized properly? Does running a tool like "xdpyinfo" or "gedit" work? Whatever this problem is, it is however unrelated to Avahi, most likely some issue with your X setup and possibly pygtk. Also, note that what avahi-discover does graphically you can do in a terminal too, by running "avahi-browse -a".
