I hate the fact that the licenses are incompatible (I've wanted to
combine Apache/GPL code in the past,) but I don't think it is a tragedy.
I don't see how the GPL would maintain the ideals of the FSF if this
intermixing were allowed.

I think you should tell them. Every group with an Open Source license
needs to know about this sort of issue to keep the use of their license
clean and meaningful.
