Avalon/Phoenix is designed for this very purpose. Avalon/Phoenix is the 
"application server" part.

jakarta-avalon CVS (really the framework subproject) and Phoenix will be your 
best bet. After that I would checkout cornerstone .. however there is no much 
documentation for that ;)

I think they are using a fairly recent version.
