Wrong - the JVM ignores it.

done deliberately. I actually wrote a bunch of ant tasks (see extension tasks 
in ant docs) to do this but after implementing it I found that it was not 
possible without breaking stuff.

Anything that plans to run in Tomcat 4.x has a high chance of not working if 
you include extension entries. Bugs in TC
