Have you had a change to look over the docs/sources for the interfaces and classes under org.apache.excalibur.assembly.* - ? This is the refactoring I'm working on to handle (a) simplification of the assembly engine (the ComponentManager and TypeManager stuff), and (b) introduction of a drop-dead-simple embeded assembly engine service.
