0xAC is "RSP_DEBUGWIRE_SYNC_FAILED". Kind of surprsing since apparently, AVRDUDE can at least talk some debugWIRE with your device. Is your /RESET pin going straight to the ISP cable and nothing else? Do you have not more than ~ 10 cm of ISP cabling?
