I can't help you to correct the problem but I often use qtrecompress. I
encountered the problem too and I found a "work around" that seem's to work
almost everytime : launch qtrecompress and configure it as you like. Then
save your configuration in a file (test.conf for example...), then quit
qtrecompress. Now launch "qtrecompress test.conf". This way qtrecompress will
function in command line mode, without qt gui. And it works till the end ;-)
