I don't know whether it applies to you or not...

I have a K6-450 MHz. in India, and it sucks.  I have compared it with
the P-III 550 MHz I have at work, and the K6-450 one is about 2.5
times slower than the P-III. 

In my K6-450, running xmms or mpg123 takes about 8 % CPU, while the
P-III 550 MHz. takes about 1.5 %.  I think that in my case, it is the
poor motherboard with little or no cache that is causing problems.
Some cheap motherboards report good cache (> 256 kb), but that is
wrong info that they are displaying, they sometimes do not have cache
built-in.
