Avifile comes under LGPL (See http://sourceforge.net/projects/avifile) -
so it IS possible to USE this library and to use it on 'closed source'
projects:

(From LGPL)
   5. A program that contains no derivative of any portion of the
Library, but is designed to work with the Library by being compiled or
linked with it, is called a "work that uses the Library".  Such a
work, in isolation, is not a derivative work of the Library, and
therefore falls outside the scope of this License.


Also the SDL comes with LGPL: see http://www.libsdl.org/license.html


If you have some questions concering the source code - especially 
concerning the use of the avifile lib, ask.  I think it will be no 
problem to send you the interface to the avifile lib - it is mostly one 
C++ file (about 500 lines including comments).
