--fullscreen  is already an recognized option for aviplayer

well maximize is scaling image to the fullscreen of you current screen.
If you have accelerated hw rendering - you should get smoother image
without any speed loose - however if you are just using 
x11 renderer then you definitely should use screen modes without
any extra scaling in the rendering path....
