so you will have to intall SDL library which is linked without ESD
(currious who is it possible to install libsdl without reqired depedency
libraries - in debian you could choose from about 4 builds - with
alsa, oss,...)

Avifile itself doens't need alsa, esd,.. - it is just linking libsdl
and it's on you to install proper libsdl.

you can't link  libsdl which itself contains references to -lesd
without -lesd present in your system (you may send them wishlist
report so they would link libraries in runtime - just like
amiga was doing 15 years ago or like avifile tries to reassemble
this behaviour in some parts now :)

I'm not sure what do you mean by this ?
Of course  Xine is using also libwin32 emulation for using win32 codecs -
and they do not need avifile for this (thought they can't use directshow
codecs I think)

For DivX movies you don't even need to use Win32 codecs - you
may use ffmpeg or DivX4 native linux libraries.
