I've never used sdl-cvs but using sdl-1.2.2 and have no problems with it. But my experience with sdl is, that one always should compile it itself. I've tried to install avifile on a friend's computer (with Suse-7.1) and failed since there was a pre-installed version of sdl (it was some weeks ago and I got the message like G Narayanan got). When I used a precompiled sdl version on my Slack-8.0 PC I had other problems, so in my opinion one should always compile sdl itself.
