One could disable compilation of Xft support with --disable-xft
Also I think this problem might be caused by missing XFlush call for
that display.
Also it might be useful to select some usable font...
Supported are all subtitles I've ever seen MYSELF - sure there are other formats
- but unless I will get a sample movie with sample subtitle file I could
not write support for them (btw this is usualy very easy to if
the format isn't complicated - mostly all the standard ones have just
time or frame number for the begining and the end of the subtitle...
