Properly install   Xft fonts 
(Check  file   /etc/X11/XftConfig   there are dirs:
dir "/usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttfiso" 
dir "/usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttfnoniso" 
dir "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1"
dir "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/drakfont"
dir "/usr/share/fonts/default/Type1" 

be sure you directory with your fonts are listed here

if using TTF would make you still serious problems just disable them with
--disable-xft     (might be runtime option in the near future...)
