Consider to get fresh copy of CVS snapshost (or better the cvs itself)
It looks like some bad character get into Makefile and it's hard to say
why & where - so try the clean checkout (or snapshot) and let me know
if there are still such problem.
Also it might be good idea to send me that Makefile
(which sits in avifile-0.6.0.20011130/lib - so I could check what was
actually wrong with the line 288)
