Summary: sound is recorded garbled or not at all

Initial Comment:
when i start avicap for first time, it says sound
recording, but when i play it is totally garbled, like
background noise. avicap exits OK but sound still plays.

if i try to record another time, it won't record any
sound to the file and avicap will not exit properly but
hangs.

configuration:
debian woody
kernel 2.4.1, 2.4.5, 2.4.12
OSS sound driver via-kt133 soundchip of kernel
latest avifile packages (10.02.2001) but had that
problem since 0.53.x
i set the mixer to record line in, and max. volume.
the line out of the video card is plugged into the line
in of the sound card

it was a bug in the ac97 oss driver of the linux kernel,
which recorded garbled noise if switched to mono (see ac97
driver project). the oss driver is fixed by now.
it has nothing to do with avifile

user probably doesn't selected proper input channel
in audio mixer - future version of avicap
might have some simple mixer support for this.
But so far this is not a bug of avicap
