Hello,

I'm writing because I have a few questions and points I'd like to express regarding
avifile, but before I do that, I would like to thank all the developers and people
being involved in programming avifile and making this application possible.
Without this app, I'd be forced to have windows installed on a computer for TV-Out
and DivX playback, but with avifile, windows is no longer needed here.
I've been a computer programmer for more than ten years and I've seen many different
programming projects come and go, and it's not often one see programmers take on
such a hard project as this, serious video in a not very multimediafriendly OS
like Linux, and keep it going all through the process, ending up with a perfect
and in all ways, fully working player, and then keep adding better features all
the time to the project, thank you very much for this software!

Ok, now to my questions (and by the way, if someone replies, think about the
fact I'm not 'on' the mailinglist, so you'll have to include my email separately
on the replyline or I won't see the mail)..

1) There are so many different codecs for both video and audio, but I've not been
able to find README's or docs saying the differences between them. Today when
I updated the CVS again a new "mad" audioencoder plugin was added, it works perfect
but still it's impossible to know the difference in encodingfeatures/prestanda
between this encoder and the elder LayerIII audio plugin. Both works so which one
should one use? Perhaps it would be a good idea to create a plugin comparision page
on the web that describes the differences between video or audio plugins that does
the same thing, so one know what plugin to use for maximum quality, or chose another
plugin if one has a slower box?

2) One thing I don't understand is what the "Audio Resampling" feature in the players
frontend/GUI does, I've found some movies that goes out of sync in audio/video unless
I enable 44.000 reampling (that took me quite some time to find out), but what is it
these controls/options actually do to the sound?

3) Docs!! I know from own experience how annoying it is receiving mails asking for
tons of things, especially things that are boring to write/produce, but this project
really does need more docs.. See it this way, the player has simply great features
that people might not even find out about unless they're mentioned in a documentation!
I just recently (although I've used the player since it was started being developed)
found out about the posibility to drag encoders/codecs under Config->Decoder!
Guess if I was confused, I've been waiting for that feature for quite long and even
started to hack my own shellscripts for moving plugins out/in from the plugindir to
achive this effect and it's been in the player all the time! It would be so great
for me and others if the player got a real user documentation describing it's features!

4) The avibench binary just keeps segfaulting for me when I run it with any of the
switches -sdl, -yuv or -direct, I don't know if it's my box (I tend to use CVS versions
of most support libs, SDL etc), but it seems strange, does this work for others or
are there more with the same problem? PS. Without any switches, avibench works..

Thanks again,

Best regards, Markus Gustavsson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
