I've got a problem playing audio from divx files. In older versions of avifile (a month or two ago) I didn't have any trouble with aviplay -- but recent CVS hasn't been able to detect an audio stream from an opendivx file (which, incidentally, was encoded using avifile).
I noted on the website that as of feb 13, this problem was supposed to have been solved. I got CVS today (feb 15) and it doesn't seem to work yet. A bug report was requested. CVS from 3 days ago played video for this file, but no audio. Today's CVS doesn't play video or audio (though video seems to work alright in one other test avi). This is a 30 second clip. What confuses me is that it is able to initialize the audio stream, but then it seems as though it is unable to detect it. Hope this helps.
