Depends on graphics card hardware and support and hw manuals for the
card.  Most of the cards would most probably support DMA memory
transfers - however this would have to be support by the
kernel as this requires direct access to the hardware registers
and if you are running Xfree at the same time you might either
lock the machine completely or even possibly damage your hardware
with some older hardware....

Also most modern card could be doing very precise video display
operation (so no more tearing or jumps with the image)

Also deinteralacing is quite common these days...

Also it's quite hard to say which transfer would be faster -
DMA could be possible much slower than burts write modes on modern CPUs
like PIV 

Anyway - this all requires usualy to deeply study chip architecture
for a given card (NVidia without doc, Ati, Matrox) and I guess I'll
leave support of these features to XFree developers...

Well - Athlon 1400MHz eats about 15% CPU while decompressing DivX movie
Why should I buy something for $150 which will most probably not support
the latest divx5 codecs....
