Hmm 'compile fine' - I'm quite sure there had to be several
warning during this compilation process that without SDL there
will be no video rendering.

But most probably you do not have -devel package installed for libSDL
Please install it
then go to avifile directory:
rm config.cache
configure
make clean
make install
