For the stable it's been version 0.7.12 - very very very old one.
You could - ask Christian to update this package to the latest CVS
(but at this moment subtitles will not work correctly)
Build debian package from CVS version yourself - building process
is quite simple
fakeroot debian/buildpackage
inside avifile dir should work (if not it's bug which should be reported)

There are certain problem with certail people in Debian which
efectively blocks entering of newer avifile packages into stable
by reporting simple bugs as hard one...
Please try to build package yourself - if you will have any problem
