I would have assumed that 

--with-xvid-prefix=/path/x/y 

should work - if it doesn't then I've probably made some mistake 
I'll try to play with it (also I should probably upgrade plugin
for newer xvid CVS - there are some changes which make it a bit
incompatible)

If --with-xvid-prefix doesn't work expect fixes on monday.
