Vidix might cause troubles - for now I don't have that much
time to play with this part.

This problem is really strange - I'd have supposed that
your system configuration is strange.

VENDOR_MATROX  is defined in drivers/libdha/pci_vendors.h
which is included by  mga_vid.c source file 

So I don't seen any chance how these fings couldn't be properly
reased - are you sure you have clean & complete CVS checkout of avifile ???

Also you may always try to use 
configure --disable-vidix
