Yes - many systems usually use this - but avifile's configure.in
is written in compatible way so it should work with all known to
me automakes.

But you may try this:

find . -name '*.ac' | xargs rm
autogen.sh

maybe the older autoconf will work properly for you.

But this really looks like some serious fault in the auto* tools
installed on your system.
