I'm not an expert and I do Know nothing about autoconf, automake and similar tools, but it seems to me that the package avifile-0.7.33-20030314.tgz that I downloaded, does not compile. Here is the error I got:

I'm working on a Slackware 8.1 box. I'm sending you some file about my configuration.
