I don't know if this is interesting to anyone but when I tried to compile avifile0.7-0.7.34 on Mandrake 9.0, SDL support wasn't found.

Compiling Linux multimedia stuff from source almost never works for me so I'll leave it there - good luck if you are interested. Xine works well for me, and I use videolan to watch DVDs so the basics are working.
