Well it's not weird if the two libXft linked into one program cause the
problem.
If I remember it correctly - you have had the problem with
sorted -L entrines in the automake - have you find the time check
why is this happing on your box ?
BTW do you have the same problem if you are using CVS or snapshot.
I would stronly recommend to remove libXft.so for you first version of Xft
you should leave there only Xft.so.0 file.
