It's the only forum I know of that still allows that kind of liberty, and it requires quite a bit of moderation for this to work well enough. So mikrocontroller.net is really the exception, and avrfreaks.net is just doing as anybody else. (They did allow anonymous postings in the past, too, but eventually, this attracted too much spam and too many trolls.) Just look at this list here: it also only allows postings from subscribed users. Send a big "thanks!" to all the spammers for that kind of restrictions being applied. I agree that all these fora lack tree-like thread displays which better newsreaders have no problems with.
