Follow-up Comment #1, bug #30436 (project avr-libc):

This is caused by avr-gcc and avr-as knowing differents parts.
Try "avr-as -mmcu foobar" to prove the point.

I'm not sure downgrading the binutils would be a solution. one could try the
FreeBSD patch that add the missing parts to gcc and recompile it :
