Matthias Wei�er has that USBisp project documented on his homepage, http://www.matwei.de/ . This is an ATmega8 + FTDI FT245BM implementing a full STK500v1 (maybe even v2 now) compatible ISP programmer that can be controlled over USB. Part of it is a bootloader that talks a drastically stripped-down STK500v1 protocol so it fits into the boot loader section of the ATmega8. I'd guess you could use that one almost directly.
