So far, AVRDUDE doesn't map AVR signatures at all.  However, if it can
initialize the AVR at all, it will print the signature.

As you've got troubles to really read *anything* at all, I doubt that
would help you.

Can you try a plain serial connection (e. g. through a USB<->RS-232
bridge)?
