Follow-up Comment #1:

Option 1) is currently too much effort compared to the benefit.
It would require many structural changes in the code.

I don't say it cannot be done, but I wouldn't want to spend any
time in such a large change myself.  So if someone really feels
like implementing it, she might propose an actual patch. :)

Option 2), I just committed a fix in r1425.  Surprisingly, the
documentation always claimed that the format of output files
defaulted to "raw binary", yet it's not been implemented that
way. ;-)

Option 3): the code is right, "par.c" is the only programmer
taking care about what has been specified with -E.  All other
programmer implementations just ignore it (by now).
