In my micro-benchmarks, Java's HTTP-based client and server seemed fast enough for the applications that I have in mind. So I currently have no plans to implement a higher-performance transport. That said, I'd like to keep the code structured so that adding more transports is simple, in case we do find a need for additional transports.
