Hi Gordon, The tough answer is that the engine _can_ display an infinite amount of polies. Performance is something that's entirely arbitrary, and unless you provide a concrete framework for how performance should be measured, no one will be able to help you with answering that question.
Away3D was started in 2007 by Alexander Zadorozhny and Rob Bateman, as a branch off Papervision. It has since developed significantly and is no more similar to Papervision than any of the other engines, really. Hope this helps!
