this error is simply due to missing imports in your code.

if you have for instance
private var view:View3D;
but do not have right after the package a line import away3d.containers.View3D;
you will indeed get this error.

If you would still get the arcane error, make sure you choose the parent folder of the away library in your settings. In my case it was a stupid double class found both in the relative folder and in the lib triggering the error.
